Dayton, Ohio
Dayton Ohio has an estimated population of 158,800 as of 2005. The city was founded on April 1, 1796 and was named after Jonathan Dayton, a captain in the Revolutionary War. The Miami and Erie Canals, which were built in the 1830’s, connect Dayton to other areas. In March of 1913, there was a catastrophic flood that affected most of the city and pushed people into surrounding communities. The flood is still an important event in the city’s history. Dayton was heavily involved in World War II, hosing the Monsato Chemical Company which produced polonium for atomic bombs.
There are many things to see in Dayton including the Wright Patterson Air Force Base, the national Museum of the U.S. Air Force, and the Huffman Prairie Flying Field & Interpretative Center. For cultural events visit the Wright Cycle Company Complex, the Dayton Art Institute, Carillon Park, Dayton International Peace Museum, and the Hoover Historical Center. Furthermore, there is the Dayton Opera, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Dayton Ballet and the Human Race Theatre Company.
